Marine Gardens Bowling Club – report for week ending 06/06/21.
(June 06, 2021)A delightfully warm Bank Holiday saw Marine make the trip to the delightfully appointed Middleton BC. A West Sussex League match: four sets of triples ensued.
It was one of those strange matches where each side had rinks win strongly and others lose comprehensively. Fortunately, for the visitors they had two winning rinks to balance out the losing two – net result was a draw, 69 shots to each team.
Top rink was Bob Cole, John Nettleingham & skip Ivan Godsmark who won by 31 shots to 6. Also in the credit column was Leon White, Terry Urben & skip Norman Deegan, victorious by 25 shots to 11.

Paul Baker, Steve Davis & skip Philip Floyd – lost by 29 shots to 7.
Leon White, Terry Urben & skip Norman Deegan – won by 25 shots to 11.
Terry Ashley, Dave Mugridge & skip Dennis Martin – lost by 23 shots to 6.
Bob Cole, John Nettleingham & skip Ivan Godsmark – won by 31 shots to 6.
Marine Gardens 69 shots drew with Middleton 69 shots.
Wednesday 2 June and Marine made the much shorter trip to Field Place, for a Brodie Tray match against our friends from Goring Manor. The experienced trio of Albert Leatham, John Nettleingham and skip Jim Gray enjoyed a good win by 19 shots to 13 and were ahead throughout.
However, the other three rinks, despite their best endeavours, could not overcome their determined hosts and all were beaten.

Roger Parrish, Albie Marsella, Shaun Coppard & skip Steve Davis – lost by 10 shots to 23.
Albert Leatham, John Nettleingham & skip Jim Gray – won 19 shots to 13.
Wendy Wilson, Dennis Crossweller & skip Bob Cole – lost by 12 shots to 23.
Gerry Perch & skip Jenny Ashman – lost by 6 shots to 31.
Marine Gardens 47 shots lost to Goring Manor 90
Thursday 3 June and another Brodie Tray match, this time at home against Lancing. The rink of Reg Perkins, Liz Baldwin, Michael Ives, and skip Bob Cole lost by 10 shots to 17. However, a combination of home advantage, sea air and some simple good bowling saw well-deserved wins on the other three rinks.
The first triple of Albert Leatham, Shaun Coppard and skip Mike Hitchin won by 22 shots to 7. The second triple of Wendy Wilson, Pamela Chambers & skip Tim Baldwin won by 24 shots 10. Finally, it was a strong showing from the pair of Steve Davis & skip Ivan Godsmark who won by 28 shots to 9.
A particularly good win overall for Marine by 84 shots to 43.

Steve Davis & skip Ivan Godsmark – won by 28 shots to 9.
Marine Gardens 84 shots beat Lancing 43 shots.
Friday 4 June – the home match against East Preston B; West Sussex League, was cancelled due to adverse weather.
Saturday 5 June – A beautiful afternoon at Marine Gardens; the dark cloud & rain of the previous day replaced by blue sky and warm sun. The visitors were Worthing, the match a friendly comprising 4 sets of triples. Worthing played very well throughout and deserved their comprehensive victory on all rinks. Marine applied themselves but were frankly hammered.

Reg Perkins, Wendy Wilson & skip Jim Gray – lost by 6 shots to 21.
Albert Leatham, Pauline Sayer & skip Harry Smith – lost by 8 shots to 25.
Mary Etherington, Josh Jackman & skip Terry Urben – lost by 9 shots to 30.
Marine Gardens 34 shots lost to Worthing 96 shots.
Internal Competitions:
Dennis Martin played Mark Berriman in the 100-UP comp; first player to reach 100 points wins. A very even battle ensued, and the players were always close, reaching parity at 90 points each. It was the more experienced Dennis who held on to win by 103 points to 97, but no disgrace for Mark who is improving all the time.
However, the Berriman household was not on the losing side all week. Mark’s partner, Paula Seymour, was also playing in the 100-UP, a match against the truly knowledgeable campaigner Dave Mugridge. Another awfully close game and it was Paula who emerged victorious by 103 points to 97. So, the moral of the story seems to be if you want a job done properly, or a bowls game won, get a woman to do it!
