Report for the week ending 16/08/20

(August 16, 2020)

The photos below are 93-year-old Len Tebby, former England player and now specialist lead for Marine Gardens. And Mike Hitchin; specialist skip, veteran of many hard-fought bowls matches, but practically a junior compared with the wonderful Mr Tebby!

“Marine pipped by Manor

Only one inter-club match this week; Friday 14/08 and Marine welcomed good friends Goring Manor for a social game comprising 3 triples.

On rink 1 the Marine trio was Ray Hatton, Dave Holden, and enthusiastic skip Harry Smith. A very even contest ensued with neither side pulling ahead. The outcome was a fitting tie; 11 shots apiece.

Over on rink 3 veteran skip Mike Hitchin marshalled his troops: John Eilbeck and Alan Patterson, with his usual aplomb. However, the visitors were not subdued and after 14 ends each team had 13 shots banked. All to play for and it was the hosts who held their nerve; garnered 6 shots over the last 4 ends and ran out winners by 19 shots to 15.

On rink 5 the home side found the going harder. The Marine trio of Len Tebby, Shaun Coppard and skip Jenny Ashman stuck to their guns but were behind for the whole game, eventually losing by 18 shots to 8. The final analysis showed 1 rink winning, 1 drawing and 1 losing. And overall a well-deserved win by just 6 shots for Goring Manor.

Rink scores summarised below –

Ray Hatton, Dave Holden & skip Harry Smith – 11 shots drew v Stuart 11 shots

John Eilbeck, Alan Patterson & skip Mike Hitchin – 19 shots won v Harvey 15 shots

Len Tebby, Shaun Coppard & skip Jenny Ashman – 8 shots lost v Derek 18 shots

Marine Gardens 38 shots lost to Goring Manor 44 shots.
