Marine Gardens BC - Report w/ending 12, July 2020

(July 12, 2020)

“To the end of 12/07/20 65 members have resumed bowls, with some days seeing rinks fully booked throughout all three sessions. The commencement of club competitions has clearly spurred people on to practice and of course play their matches. Recent results include –

100-up: Terry Ashley prevailed in a closely fought affair against Alan Patterson, winning by 101 points to 99. In the same format Terry Urben beat Leon White by 100 points to 80; a match that was more balanced than the bare score-line suggests.

Junior Cup: This competition is reserved for players who have yet to win any comps at Marine Gardens. Decidedly not for junior players in terms of age, as previous winners include the excellent Len Tebby who was over 90 at the time his name was added to the cup!

Bob Cole 22 shots beat Roy Mills 10 shots

Gerry Perch 21 shots beat Paula Seymour 9 shots

Steve Davis 22 shots beat David Hughes 11 shots

Handicap Singles: Wendy Wilson 18 shots beat Jenny Ashman 13 shots.

Veteran Singles: Reserved for over 70s only. Harry Tattersall 18 shots beat David Hughes 3 shots.

Championship Singles: Mark Berriman beat Matt Ryan in a ding-dong battle which lasted 25 ends.

A terrific match with both players producing some fine bowling, but eventually Berriman won by the narrowest of margins; 21 shots to 20.

All these club comps are whetting people’s appetite for the Supreme Champion clash; set for 3pm on Saturday 25 July. This annual game sees the reining ladies and gents’ singles champions from the previous season meet in a showdown of the sexes. The handsome silver “Kate Kidman” trophy was generously denoted by Bryan and Jan Hartley, in memory of Bryan’s late mother. The inaugural contest was 2017 when Jenny Ashman beat Ivan Godsmark. The following year Jill Colbourn kept the flag flying for the ladies by beating Mike Collins. 2019 saw the gents chalk up their first win, with Terry Urben beating Jan Hartley.

2020 sees previous contestants Jill Colbourn and Ivan Godsmark return. Each will be hoping for victory, but the crowd will hope for a close game and plenty of good bowls. Club members always support this game, but the public is equally welcome. So please come along to the beautiful Marine Gardens; 3pm on Saturday 25 July, and be part of an enthusiastic, social and socially distant crowd!”
