OPENING DRIVE AT MARINE GARDENS

(April 20, 2019)

“Glorious weather, more suited to high summer, greeted 48 members of Marine Gardens Bowling Club as the green was re-opened after a long winter rest. Club President Jill Colbourn & Club Captain Michael Ives welcomed everyone to the new season. President Jill and Vice-Captain Francis Fahey then played a couple of ceremonial ends to formally commence proceedings.

The action continued with a traditional spider; everyone armed with one bowl, unleashing it simultaneously and trying to finish closest to one jack in the centre of the green. After the melee of bowls had stopped moving it transpired Frieda Goulding was nearest; a bottle of spirits her reward.

The customary Opening Drive commenced; one side bearing sticky spots on their bowls for ease of identification. The green played well; tribute to the hard work of council greenkeepers Stuart & Sam, and all members enjoyed being back out in the sun.

Two new members were making their first appearance; Gerry Perch and Jennie Power, and Captain Michael gave them a warm welcome during the much-needed tea break. There was also a welcome home to former club captain & President, Albert Leatham.

At the end of the afternoon a tally-up of the scorecards revealed that the Sticky Spots were victorious, by 103 shots to 85, over the Not-Spotty! Top rink for the Sticky Spots was Pamela Chambers, Bill Hebert, Noel Stevenson & skip Harry Smith who won by 27 shots to 7 on their rink.

For the Not-Spotty gang the best rink was Leslie McMurdie, David Duffield, David Hughes and skip Dave Mugridge, who won by 19 shots to 13.

All members went home happy & with fingers crossed for another five months of similar weather!”
