Club Match Results

Marine Gardens Bowling Club was bursting with activity last week as the general public went to the popular seafront club to watch the annual Grand Finals being played amidst glorious sunshine to the delight of the spectators.   They were not disappointed as the competitors provided some amazing bowls competitions to a standard equivalent to a world class tournament

Some highlights of the two day event included:

Terry Urben was crowned Men's Single Champion for 2018 after a commanding performance defeating Mike Elborough with a final score of 21 - 13.

Jan Hartley provided a nail biting performance by winning the Ladies Single Championship, defeating Pauline Hughes by just one point with a tally of 21 - 20.   She displayed a calm dispositiion after leading the match by 17 to 4, suddenly watching her lead disappear as Hughes turned on all the taps and within a few ends was holding lead at 20 - 19.   On the final end, Hartley then managed to put two bowls close to the jack to take out the title.

Ivan Godsmark competing in the Handicap Singles was 14 - 2 down after 8 ends, then turned the match around by scoring a 4 on one end after his opponent was holding 2, and within a short time emerged the outright winner by beating Terry Urben 19 to 14.

Len Tebby, a nonagenarian and former England and international player, became the oldest winner of the Junior Cup by defeating Alan Paterson in an exciting match  showing a final score of 18 to 15.

Winners of the club Triples League included Ivan Godsmark (team Captain), Lucy Marshman, Kaye Elborough, John Nettleingham, Roy Mills and Bryan Hartley.

HANDICAP PAIRS - Mike Elborough/David Smart defeated Jim Gray/Roger Parrish - 22 - 15.   2 WOOD YARDSTICK - Ivan Godsmark defeated Terry Ashley - 13 - 8.  LADIES PAIRS - Jenny Ashman/Pauline Hughes defeated Frieda Goulding/Mary Etherington - 19 - 10.   STAN WHEELER TROPHY - Mike Elborough defeated Jan Hartley - 20 - 7.   ONE HUNDRED UP - Terry Urben defeated Ivan Godsmark - 100 - 90.   JUNIOR CUP - Len Tebby defeated Alan Paterson - 18 - 15.   HANDICAP SINGLES - Ivan Godsmark defeated Terry Urben - 19 - 14.   MIXED PAIRS - Francis Fahey/Jenny Ashman defeated Terry Ashley/Frieda Goulding - 18 - 12.   VETERANS SINGLES - David Smart defeated Keith Doughty - 18 - 13.   CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS - Jim Gray/Ivan Godsmark  defeated John Nettleingham/Harry Tattersall - 27 - 12.   LADIES SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP - Jan Hartley defeated Pauline Hughes - 21 - 20.   MENS SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP - Terry Urben defeated Mike Elborough - 21 - 13.

Following the presentation of the trophies and medals by Mrs Kaye Elborough, President Mike Elborough paid tribute to all players who competed in the two day event and providing such a superb demonstration of the game of bowls.   He also expressed his gratitude and thanks to those members who volunteered their services in marking, scoring and providing general assistance in ensuring the Finals event ran smoothly.
