Marine Gardens emerged as the undisputed champions of Division 3 of the WSBL last weekend with a final tally of 99 points.   14 clear points ahead of their nearest rival, Maltravers BC.   Throughout the 14 match series, Marine Gardens lost only 2 games, one of which was against Petworth playing on their artificial surface, a notorious green for catching out those unused to playing on that type of aspect.   Francis Fahey, Marine Gardens team leader said, "It was a great result from the hard work that each and every player had contributed.   We now look forward to an even greater challenge when we are elevated to Division 2 playing in the 2019 season".   Marine Gardens final WSBL match was against Petworth at home last Saturday, soundly defeating them by way of revenge for losing on their difficult rink some 10 days previously with a final score of 89 to 59 and victory on all 4 rinks.   Halfway through the match, Marine Gardens were never really threatened with over a 20 shot lead, and at its conclusion, Dennis Martin (26 - 12) became the top rink winner, with Ivan Godsmark (25 - 13), Harry Smith (19 - 18) and Mike Hitchin (19 - 16) who contributed to Marine Gardens victory and earning 10 league points also.

The Captains Charity Fun Day was held last Sunday with members of the public trying their hand at the various games and competitions that were available on and off the green.   The day was very well attended by both the local populace and visitors alike and at the close of day, Marine Gardens had raised over £770 for the 'Care For Veterans' charity based at Gifford House, Boundary Road, Worthing.

In other news, Marine Gardens arose triumphant competing in the Stracey League against Southwick Park with a final score of 68 to 66 with 2 rink victories from 4 playing on the Southwick green.   The match was closely fought from the beginning and only 6 shots separated the 2 teams at the halfway stage.   Ivan Godsmark, well down showing only 2 on the scoreboard after 10 ends, made a remarkable comeback in the second half to score a further 14, but was finally defeated 16 to 18.   Mike Hitchin meanwhile maintained a consistent score rate with wins on 12 out of 21 ends, finishing with a 20 - 13 victory.   Mike Ives, the remaining skip scored 12 - 20 and unfortunately went down.   A total of 6 league points were awarded to Marine Gardens with 4 to Southwick Park.

Playing away at Field Place in the Brodie League, Marine Gardens lost to the Goring Manor (Spitfires) with a final match score of 56 to the Spitfires 82.   David Sayer (19 - 15) was the only rink winner for the day with Mike Hitchin (16 - 16) establishing a final draw.   Mike Ives (6 -  29) and Ivan Godsmark (15 - 22) both went down.   3 league points were allocated to Marine Gardens with 7 to the Spitfires.

In the friendly matches played during the week, the annual encounter with Arundel on their green saw Marine Gardens claim victory for the day with a final score of 76 to 69.   2 rinks, 1 draw and 1 loss was the tally for the day with Mike Elborough (25 - 13) taking the top rink with Leon White (14 - 12) the other successful skip.   Ivan Godsmark (20 - 20) achieved a draw whilst Jenny Ashman (17 - 24) unfortunately lost.

Away to Norfolk, a 5 rink friendly was a worthwhile engagement with Marine Gardens taking the match scoring 99 to 92.   Three of the 5 rinks were victorious with Dennis Martin (26 - 14) taking the top rink assisted by Len Tebby, Linda Godsmark and Dave Mugridge.   Both David Sayer (19 - 16) and Mike Hitchin (25 - 15) were successful whilst Ivan Godsmark (12 - 26) and Janice Sebastiano (17 - 21) both lost.
