SUPREME CHAMPION
(May 06, 2018)JILL COLBOURN was crowned Supreme Champiion of 2018 at Marine Gardens last Saturday defeating the current Men's Singles Champion Mick Collins over a total of 25 ends scoring 21 shots to 15.
Arguably one of the most skilful matches yet seen at Marine Gardens, both players demonstrated their expertise to the delight of the large audience of both public and members attending. With a score of 7 shots apiece after 11 ends, Colbourn slowly edged ahead managing to score 4 on the 16th, which extended her lead by 5 shots overall. On the 20th end, Collins had reduced the lead by 2, however, Colbourn fought back to take a further 2 shots on the 23rd end then an additional 1 on the final one, thus clinching the match.
In other news, Marine Gardens completed a hat trick of 3 successive victories last week, playing both home and away.
In a 5 rink triple at home, Marine Gardens defeated Steyning in a non league friendly with a score of 75 to 69. Marine Gardens struggled to a halfway debit of 30 shots to 45, however, the second half produced more positive results increasing the home team's score by some 49 shots to Steynings' 24, resulting in an outright victory. Successful skips included Luigi Sebastiano (18 - 14), Jim Gray (16 - 13) and Mike Hitchin (23 - 9). Ivan Godsmark (11- 21) and Harry Smith (11 - 12) unfortunately both went down. Top rink went to Hitchin supported by Mike Ives and Harry Tattersall.
Playing Arundel at home in a non league friendly of 4 rinks, produced the second victory of the week with Marine Gardens scoring 84 to Arundel's 65. The home team led comfortably at the halfway stage with a score of 51 to 25 and maintained their standard of play during the second half successfully holding off a last minute charge by Arundel. Len Tebby (26 - 14) and Devid Sayer (22 - 13) were the successful skips, with Ivan Godsmark manging a draw of 17 to 17. Mike Hitchin (19 - 21) went down. Top rink was awarded to Len Tebby and his team comprising Pauline Sayer, Gill Vernau and Dave Holden.
In their first away match of the season playing in the Brodie, Marine Gardens caused a shock defeat to Worthing Pavilion with a score of 88 to 82, earning 8 league points with Pavilion collecting 2. At the end of the first half, Marine Gardens lagged 12 shots behind Pavilion, but the remainder of the match produced a superb effort by Marine Gardens scoring as additional 52 compared to Pavilion's 34 to score a decisive victory against the premier club. Top rink was awarded to Harry Smith ably assisted by Jan Hartley, Mike Ives and Harry Tattersall.
