Women claim Home International crown...
ENGLAND won all four games to take the women’s Home International
Series held at the Belmont Bowling Club in Belfast last month.
Having already recorded wins against Wales and Jersey, in the crucial third game the team beat Scotland 98-95 and then went on to defeat Ireland to clinch the title.
...and Championship teams make it a British Isles double
THE British Isles Championships saw history made as the City of Ely triple featuring Ellen Falkner, her mother Sue Alexander and grandmother Dorothy Bowers
became the first team featuring three generations of the same family to win the triples title with an 18-9 victory in the final against Ireland. And the Peterborough four of Sarah Newson, Julie Masters, Val Newson and Catherine Popple stormed to the fours title with a 26-6 win against Wales in the final.
The other competitions saw Edna Bessell from Yeovil lose out 21-20
against Jersey’s Lyndsey Greechan in the final of the singles, whilst Falkner
and Alexander were beaten in the semi-final of the pairs.
Women’s Junior International Team
THE following players have been selected to play in the BIWBC Junior
Team Championships on Sunday 20th and Monday 21st July in Penarth,
Wales.

England celebrate British Isles hat-trick
ENGLAND men won three of the five titles on offer to land the Nat West
Trophy at the British Isles Championships in Llandrindod Wells, Wales.
Stuart Holland (Rosemount BC, Sussex) took the junior singles with a 21-17 win against Scotland’s Iain McLean in the final, having earlier beaten Jersey’s Jamie McDonald by the same score in the semi-final.
The Kent duo of Colin Goldsmith and Gordon Charlton from Sandwich BC
recovered from 9-1 down after six ends to claim the pairs title with a 20-16 win over Wales’ David and Robert Weale. This followed earlier wins against Scotland and Jersey to reach the final.
Danny May, Ian Airey, Richard Chandler and Stuart Airey from the Carlisle Subscription BC in Cumbria completed the treble with a 26-15 victory over the Scotland rink skipped by Robert Grant. The four had previously despatched teams from Jersey and Guernsey.
England’s other two representatives were both beaten in their opening
games by Welsh opponents. 2007 National Singles Champion Andrew
Squire (Maldon BC, Essex) lost 21-14 to Mark Weaver and the Norfolk BC
trio of Charles West, Chris Willgress and Wayne Willgress were beaten 19-15 by Gareth Jones, Ian Henderson and Martin Selway.
In the International Series, the team started off well with a win over Ireland
but then suffered defeats against both Wales and Scotland to finish in third
place.
Men’s Junior International Squad 2008
THE following squad has been selected to attend a final trial and squad training session at New Lount Bowls Club in Leicestershire on Sunday 20th July from 11am. Following this trial the team to play in the BIBC Junior International Series in Ayr Scotland on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September will be announced:

City of London BC hosts historic meeting
THE City of London Bowls Club last month played host to a meeting between Cliff Waterman, Bowls England Men’s President, and his Malaysian counterpart, Tun Dato Seri Ahmad Sarji bin Abdul Hamid.
The pair watched a match between Tottenham Hale BC and Noel Park BC whilst discussing developments in the sport across the world.
Simon Evans from the City of London BC explained:
“Tun Dato’ Seri Ahmad Sarji was in London for a few days and said he would like to meet with the Men’s President. Bowls England contacted us and we were only too happy to be able to help by hosting this historic meeting.
“Afterwards Tun Dato’ Seri Ahmad Sarji presented the club officials present with some Bowls Asia merchandise and all those present enjoyed the day.
“He added that he loved the location and the name of the bowling club, and expressed his wish that next time he visits he would like to bring along some of their top players for a game.”

‘Double your money’ with Sportsmatch
SPORTSMATCH continues to offer pound for pound matched funding to clubs for projects that encourage sports participation at grass roots level.
The scheme aims to encourage new or additional sponsorship investment from businesses, trusts and private individuals, and the awards criteria has been changed to provide greater flexibility for applicants. All projects applying in 2008/09 need to ensure they are able to deliver their project in its entirety by 31st March 2009.

Small grants scheme for clubs launched
MARS Refuel is offering grants of up to £500 to help sports clubs with anything - from equipment costs to improving facilities. The fund, which runs until 31st December 2008, has up to £10,000 to donate each month, with a maximum of £500 per applicant.
Applications can be made online at www.marsrefuel.com. Applicants must be 12 years or over and only one application will be accepted per person, club or organisation.

Advert for National Coaching Co-ordinator
THE English Bowls Coaching Scheme is inviting applications from well qualified, enthusiastic coaches for the position of National Coaching Co-ordinator from 1st September 2008. The EBCS now has over 2,600 coaches in England.
