Marine Gardens Bowling Club, report w/ending Sunday, 23rd July 2023

(July 23, 2023)

Marine Gardens experienced mixed fortunes in their league matches this week. We won the bottom of the table clash in the West Sussex Bowls League (WSBL) at home against Bognor, winning all 3 rinks with Terry Ashley, Dave Smith, Ken Leadbeater and skip David Sayer leading the way with a 21-14 victory.

This ,however, was followed by defeat at the hands of Worthing in the Brodie Tray League. Each team won on 2 rinks making this a close encounter, but Worthing did enough to claim match points with a 77 - 57 shots victory.

The 1st leg of the annual match for the Horsham Centenary Bowl was won by the visitors from the north with a narrow margin of 102 - 95.The home team were best served by ex-Horsham stalwart Harry Smith, Brian Harrison, Allan Crosskey and skip Mark Berriman who kept us in touch for the 2nd leg with a 30 - 12 win. A lovely afternoon with all to play for in September.

The Club Drive still attracts good numbers and in particular our newer members are making a mark. Thanks to all who give encouragement. This week the plaudits were earned by David Sayer, Helen Stirling, and Jeff Ashby.

The big disappointment was the cancellation of ‘Captain's Day’ on Saturday, due to the very un-July like weather, however, good news for the green and a welcome rest for the club watering team!

Alan Paterson, Press Officer.
