Marine Gardens Bowling Club, report w/ending Sunday, 25th June 2023

(June 25, 2023)

Unfortunately, we could not fulfil our fixture in the Bognor PC Cup, but we did manage to travel later in the week to meet Bognor in the WSBL. Marine Gardens won 2 rinks to 1 but lost overall on shots 49 – 60, and the match points were equally shared 4 apiece. Mick Collins, Pat Hogan, Allan Crosskey and skip Ivan Godsmark fought their way back from 15 -11 down to win 18-17 in a really tight match.

The following day victory was achieved in our friendly home match against Rottingdean, Marine Gardens winning 3 rinks to 2 and a shot difference of 92-76. Top rink honours went to Anne Knight, Pete Guy, and Allan Crosskey (25-10).

Saturday featured a battle of the sexes against Arundel with the men competing at home in the WSBL whilst the ladies played away in the GSM league.

The men’s match went Arundel's way, winning all 3 rinks and an overall shot difference of 68 – 53, thus taking a maximum 8 points. Credit, however, must go to Jim Gray, Gerry Perch, Bob Samson, and Brian Harrison, who fought a rearguard action rallying from 16 - 0 down to losing on the final end 23-26.

The ladies team went some way to redeeming Marine Gardens' pride by beating the ladies of Arundel, winning 1 rink 18 – 14 and the other rink drawn at 16 – 16, earning them 5 of the 6 available points. A very close result played in exacting conditions and credit goes to all involved, especially the top rink of Jenny Ashman, Betty Stevenson, Pauline Crosskey and Liz Baldwin.

Amidst this flurry of competitive matches the Club Drive produced worthy top rink winners,  Heather Marsella, Rob Hurst, Pete Guy and Rod Smith (27-8) Good to see new members featuring in the 'honours list’.

On Sunday morning, the clubs’ committee members extended a warm welcome to this seasons’ new members at a “Meet and Greet” coffee morning. Marine Gardens Bowling Club takes immense pride and pleasure to welcome so many experienced and new to bowling members to the club, we hope you all enjoy many happy years of bowling pleasure at Marine Gardens.

Alan Paterson, Press Officer.
