Bowls Report - Marine Gardens BC - week ending Saturday 27/04/18
(April 27, 2019)Tuesday 24/04 saw Marine Gardens welcome near neighbours & friends Goring Manor for a 6-rink social match. As usual Goring Manor fielded a very strong team and the home side’s hospitality was repaid with a deserved defeat on 5 of the 6 rinks. The rink scores concluded thus –

Marine Gardens 97 shots lost to Goring Manor 131 shots; margin 34 shots
The sole winning rink for Marine was skipped by Ivan Godsmark; well supported by Jan Hartley, Fred Knight & club president Jill Colbourn, who won by 26 shots to 12.
Thursday 25/04 and Marine Gardens were once more at home; this time the visitors were Pulborough who trekked down the A24 for a friendly game; 4 lots of triples. Thankfully the hosts had more to cheer about, with victory coming on 3 of the 4 rinks and by a margin of 10 shots; 73 to 63. Top rink for Marine was skipped by Dave Mugridge, backed up by Ian Dalton & Terry Urben; victorious by 26 shots to 11. Jim Back’s rink won by 22 shots to 18, while club secretary Jenny Ashman’s rink rallied well; 12 shots to 8 down after 11 ends they fought back to secure a 3 shot win, 17 to 14. Dennis Martin’s rink lost by 8 shots to 20, but they had the misfortune to come up against a trio of West Sussex League bowlers, skipped by Paul Leatherbarrow, an experienced player who transferred from Storrington over the winter.

Marine Gardens 73 shots beat Pulborough 63 shots; margin 10 shots.
Saturday 27/04 and the annual Ladies v Gents fixture. The threatened rain & storm clouds never materialised, but by game’s end there were several men who wished they had! There is an old expression about women being the gentler sex; you don’t hear it used much these days, and with good reason – it’s rubbish! There was not much “gentler” on display as the Marine Gardens ladies adapted best to the windy conditions and ran out winners on 4 of the 5 sets of triples.
The overall margin of victory a thoroughly convincing 91 shots to the ladies and 69 to the gents.
The only compensating win for the gents saw Eric Hayward prevail by 18 shots to 13 against Wilomena Spinks.
Top rink bragging rights for the ladies went to Stephanie Davis, Alberta Marsella & Davina Mugridge (sister of Dave) who won by 23 shots to 12. The men retired hoping for better fortune next year…but with no one holding their breath!”
